THE STORY BEHIND IT
To carve a rose in marble is to work entirely against the nature of the material. A rose is soft, layered, alive with the suggestion of movement — petals curling inward at the centre, opening outward at the base, each one overlapping the next in a sequence that feels entirely natural and entirely unrepeatable. Marble is none of these things. It is hard, cold, unyielding, and completely unforgiving of error. What the artisan has done here is convince the stone to behave like something it is not.
The result is a bloom of extraordinary fidelity. At the centre, a tight bud — the innermost petals barely open, rendered with fine incised lines that suggest texture and delicacy at a scale almost too small to believe. Moving outward, the petals open progressively, each layer carved in deeper relief than the last, until the outermost ring of petals sits almost fully raised from the surface. Beneath them, a ring of carved leaves — their veins individually incised, their edges slightly undercut — frames the entire composition and grounds the bloom in something botanical and real.
No mould, no casting, no mechanical reproduction of any kind. Each earring was carved by hand from a single piece of marble, which is why no two are perfectly identical. The variation between the pair is not a flaw — it is the proof.
